About Short Men: Answers to the discrimination against this type?
I’ll start off by saying I am 6 feet even. By the common occurences scale I am tall. So why would I ask this question? Because I think about more than myself and my issues, that’s why.
This is one of the biggest social shunning issues in civilization today. When we hear concerns over body image issues in regards to women and weight (which are indeed valid) no one ever seems to recognize the utter contempt people-at-large have for short men. I’ve seen it at my job with a capable responsible employee mocked and frequently disrespected by his own co-workers. And it angered me.
In the dating scene, on the corporate ladder, in daily interactions short men face staggering disregard as a human being. They pooh-pooh it as "short man’s syndrome" and wonder why many short men have complexes. Well when you kick a dog on a chain every day all day, how can you NOT expect for the dog to be messed up? Short men who fight back and try to overcome it all get negatively called "Napoleons".

Spot on, Mate!
There is nothing physical, emotional or cultural that should make any group of people looked down on or derided by any other.
Tall, short, fat, thin, red-headed, blond, male, female, Christian, Muslim, athiest, balck, white, purple, young, old; ALL WONDERFUL AND UNIQUE IN THEIR OWN RIGHT!

Yea I think you’re right
Everyone deals differnetly with such kinds of people..
But you can’t change them
Even no one can change this discrimination except God himself in their hearts.
We can just help by praying

i am short and know the feeling well, and women can be very mean and rude, but I look beyond that and keep moving forward I have a great sense of humor and can take whatever is dished out As far as the workforce I have shown bosses size does not matter and outperformed the man of average or taller height, Life is too short for self pity

I think we over analyze this whole short men… People don’t go around making fun of them all day long and if short men could care less about their height, so would other people. Yeah, there’s all these statistics that tall men get the girls and make more money, etc… but I think that we over do this whole discrimination stuff…when I see a short guy (around 5’7) I don’t go .. OMG look at the short guy!!! I COULD CARE LESS!!! Girls like men that are good-looking and have hott bodies…yeah being tall helps but I’ve seen lots of ugly tall men that are so repulsive I would rather date a man who was 4’11.

I think you’ve given us some rare insights, that I completely agree with. And it’s especially rare coming from a tall man. It’s unfortunate that the short-statured continue to tolerate heightism on an individual basis. Number 4 above gives a perfect example of a nonsensical argument that insults our intelligence. To think that according to this poster, we have to be “made fun of” all day long and have everyone gasp, “Oh my God, look at the short guy”! every time we pass for us to be considered victims is insulting to our collective intelligence.
The number 2 poster above thinks we can’t change anyone. Well, passing laws – especially hate crimes laws – sure seems to be working for Blacks, Hispanics, Women, Gays, Lesbians, Jews and some other groups. It’s strange that when it comes to Height and height alone, suddenly it’s “only God” that can change this discrimination. And how is he going to do it, just wave his hand and make it disappear??? These are nothing but excuses to keep heightism going.

There is no doubt that heightism is a major prejudice and also an unrecognized one. The short-statured are not recognized as a group in the same sense that people are recognized on the basis of their race, religion, color, creed, sex, sexual orientation, and some others. People realize this on a subliminal level and therefore take advantage of it. Short men are especially victims of this prejudice. It is not necessary for short men to be “made fun of all day long” for them to be victims of it, and it has nothing to do with short men “caring about their height”. They would still be victims nonetheless. The fact that a tall man would state the facts – to his credit – without the usual laughing and trivializing is strong evidence to that fact. I believe it is time for the short to start recognizing that they are victims, and also time for them to do something about it.

I believe that people who think that we are “overanalyzing” the issue over short men have absolutely no idea what they go through from day to day. Shorter men are constantly told to “stop caring” about their height, as if that was possible in a world which universally discriminates against them–yes, all the time. No anti-discrimination movement ever went anywhere by telling its members to “get over it” and “stop worrying about things you can’t change. We may not be able to change our height, but we can perhaps change the way the world looks at us, or fails to see us. We are also valuable members of society. Height does not determine greatness.

I have felt discrimination in this regard since being a small child. It’s especially hard when you’re a man as you’re constantly picked on because the tall ones don’t think you can physically fight them. What I don’t understand is why there is not a movement against this form of discrimination like the African Americans’ 1960 Civil Rights movement? Today race is considered a non-issue in many circles. The homosexuals had an organized protest for years like Act-UP. Now the military has reversed an earlier decision and is allowing gay servicemen and women to fight openly. Women rallied together in the women’s movement in order to gain rights and opportunities they felt were denied to them. The military started accepting women in 1972 and the last bastion of males has opened ranks to women as submariners.

I am a short guy, 5’3 and never encountered discrimination at my place of work, which I thank God. However, I have heard it all over and I encountered some people looking at me with some ‘disregard’ looks about my height. Some even speaking about it, and If you complain they say “you are insecure”. All I do is forget about it. Once you focus on the negative experiences all the time, you’ll never be happy. In the dating scene, of course women will give a tall guy a plus. But that doesn’t mean a short guy cannot date women. 40% of beautiful ladies I came across in college were dating average height guys, some guys being taller than them though, some being of the same height with their sweetie, and I remember one short guy dating a taller, smart student who was also modelling. When out of college I also happened to date a lady who was about 5’5!(taller than me).
